Namibia & Botswana Camping Itinerary

Arrive into Windhoek Hosea Kutako airport where you transfer to spend the first night at The Olive Grove – a small friendly guest house in the suburbs of Windhoek.

Pick up your vehicle and equipment in Windhoek and head south through spectacular scenery to the NamibRand Nature reserve where you spend the next two nights at Namibrand Hideout campsite – one of the most spectacular locations in all of Namibia. Founded to conserve the unique environment and wildlife species of the south-western Namib Desert, the park’s mix of dunes, mountains and rocky outcrops, sandy flats and gravel plains provides habitats for a diversity of mammals and truly spectacular scenery.

Head north to the Sossusvlei area of the Namib Naukluft Park. Spend one night camping at Sesriem just inside the protected area. Staying close to Sesriem means you will be able to get to the Sossusvlei dunes early when photography is at its best at the famous Deadvlei Pan, Sossusvlei, and Dune 45.

Head back north spending the next night at Lake Oanob Resort near Rehoboth.

Drive via Windhoek towards the border with Botswana. Spend the night at Kalahari Bush Breaks, ready to cross into Botswana the following day.

Drive north to Tshima Bush Camp, 30km west of Maun. Accommodation here is in en-suite safari tents,  inclusive of dinner and breakfast.

Drive to Maun where you buy provisions for the next week. You then make your way north to spend the first two nights camping at Xaoo Camp on the edge of a wildlife concession. On the following day you will do a full day mokoro (dug-out canoe) guided trip into the Delta. Your guide will show you the fauna and flora of the delta area as you meander along the channels and waterways. The trip includes a packed lunch and you will leave your vehicle at the lodge, returning back in the afternoon. Camp again at Xaoo Camp.

Drive to spend the next two nights in the Moremi Game Reserve – first at Third Bridge Camp. Accommodation is in an ensuite tent on a self-catering basis. Moremi is on the edge of the Okavango Delta and is one of the most spectacular wildlife destinations in Africa. Game is rich and varied and birdlife is prolific. The flooded pans attract numerous waterbirds whilst the surrounding woodland is habitat for a wide variety of birds as well as wildlife.

Spend the next night camping at Khwai campsite. The Khwai area is spectacular, with its leadwood and mopane woodlands in close proximity to open grasslands and the Khwai River to the north. The river floodplains with their backdrop of riverine forests are very attractive and attract numerous waterbirds as well as wildlife such as lechwe, reedbuck and waterbuck.

Continue to Khwai Guesthouse just outside Khwai village on the northern boundary of Moremi Game Reserve. Khwai Guesthouse is run by Bushways Safaris, and guiding is of the same standard as on their mobile safaris. Game drives in the concession as well as in Moremi itself are conducted. A night drive is an exciting opportunity to see some of the nocturnal wildlife such as porcupine and genet that would otherwise go unseen, as well as predators which are often active at night.

Continue north through the Chobe National Park, spending the next two nights at the famous Savuti campsite. Savuti is famous for its elephants, lions and hyenas, all of which visit the campsite area, making for an experience not to be forgotten! Listening to the night sounds from the safety of your rooftop tent is an unforgettable experience. Apart from being one of Africa’s prime game viewing areas, Savuti is also stunningly beautiful, with rocky outcrops, and rolling grasslands interspersed with dead trees.

Drive to Kasane where you return the vehicle. Spend the night at Lenyebi River Lodge by the Chobe River. In the afternoon you will do a sunset river cruise along the Chobe River. This is a highlight of many a visitor’s trip to Botswana, and amazing sights such as elephant crossing the river to feed on the grassy islands are never forgotten. Birdlife is spectacular too along the river.

Transfer across the border to Victoria Falls spending the final night at Lokuthula Lodge. Lokuthula is just 4km from the falls (there is a free shuttle bus) and next door to Victoria Falls Safari Lodge and the famous Boma restaurant. The Zimbabwean side has approximately 2/3 of the fall’s frontage and the falls are easily viewed on foot.
