Extended Namibia & Botswana Itinerary

Arrive into Windhoek Hosea Kutako airport where you transfer to spend the first night at The Olive Grove – a small friendly guest house near the centre of Windhoek.

Pick up your vehicle and equipment in Windhoek and head west to Swakopmund, Namibia’s famous coastal town. Accommodation here is at Desert Breeze Lodge. Swakopmund is a very interesting town, with old German architecture and a distinct character.

In the morning you will do a “Living Desert Tour” – a unique guided tour which brings the desert to life.

The next two nights are at Madisa Campsite. Attractions in the area include the Twyfelfontein rock paintings, the Petrified Forest, and the Organ Pipes (angular dolorite columns up to 5m high). Twyfelfontein is famed for the thousands of rock paintings and engravings found there.

Head north to spend the next three nights in and around Etosha National Park. The first night is spent at Okaukuejo in the south of Etosha.

Etosha covers an area of more than 22 000 sq kms – its centre being a vast saltpan surrounded by grass and thorn savannah, Mopane bushland in the west and dry forest in the north-east. Spend the next night at Halali.

The final night in Etosha is spent at Onguma Tamboti campsite in the Onguma concession to the east of Etosha. The campsites all have private ablution facilities and there is a central area overlooking a waterhole with a restaurant, pool and small store.

From Onguma you can also self-drive around the Namutoni and Fisher’s Pan areas of Etosha National Park, with the eastern entrance gate into Etosha only 8km away.

Drive north to the western Caprivi, spending the next two nights at River Dance Lodge 20km west of Divundu. Accommodation is in a water front chalet overlooking the river.

Cross into Botswana and head to Thamalakane River Lodge, where you spend the next two nights. Thamalakane is attractively situated 10km north of Maun by the river.

Today you will do a half day mokoro (dug-out canoe) guided trip into the Delta. Your guide will show you the fauna and flora of the delta area as you meander along the channels and waterways. The trip includes a packed lunch and you will leave your vehicle at the lodge, returning back in the late afternoon.

Drive to Moremi Game Reserve – on the edge of the Okavango Delta. Moremi is on the edge of the Okavango Delta and is one of the most spectacular wildlife destinations in Africa. Spend the first night camping at Third Bridge.

Spend the next night camping at Khwai campsite. The Khwai area is spectacular, with its leadwood and mopane woodlands in close proximity to open grasslands and the Khwai River to the north. The river floodplains with their backdrop of riverine forests are very attractive and attract numerous waterbirds as well as wildlife such as lechwe, reedbuck and waterbuck.

Continue north through the Chobe National Park, spending the next two nights at the famous Savuti campsite. Savuti is famous for its elephants, lions and hyenas, all of which visit the campsite area, making for an experience not to be forgotten! Listening to the night sounds from the safety of your rooftop tent is an unforgettable experience. Apart from being one of Africa’s prime game viewing areas, Savuti is also stunningly beautiful, with rocky outcrops, and rolling grasslands interspersed with dead trees.

Spend the next night camping at Muchenje campsite from where you will explore the western riverfront area of the park. Muchenje is located in the Chobe Enclave overlooking the Chobe floodplain.

Continue to Kasane where you return the vehicle. Accommodation is at Jackalberry Chobe on the banks of the Chobe River. Accommodation is in a river view room on a full board basis with guided activities included. Explore the best of Chobe National Park on game drives and boat cruises, with elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, giraffe and zebra being just a sample of the wildlife you may encounter.

Transfer across the border to Victoria Falls, spending the night at Pioneers Victoria Falls, situated in a quiet residential area 1km from the town centre. The Zimbabwean side has approximately 2/3 of the fall’s frontage and the falls are easily viewed on foot.
