Maun is the gateway to the Okavango Delta and is sometimes described as the tourism capital of Botswana. Situated on the Thamalakane River, one of the main rivers flowing from the Delta, Maun has a thriving tourist industry with numerous safari operators having their headquarters here.
The town itself only has a population of 85,000 although the tourist trade and the resultant bustle of activity in the town centre make it seem more. Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park are easily accessible within a few hours drive of Maun whilst the upmarket lodges are accessed by light aircraft from Maun Airport – the busiest airport in Botswana due to the number of tourist flights!
The town centre has a good variety of shops with Spar, Woolworths and Shoprite supermarkets offering a wide range of groceries – the demand of the tourist trade means a good variety of food products are available. The Mall of Maun has a large Checkers supermarket as well as a good range of other shops including Woolworths and Clicks pharmacy.
