Located on the Zimbabwean border in the southern reaches of Zambia, the Lower Zambezi region is best known as the home to the Lower Zambezi National Park. The landscape is characterised by rugged, unspoilt wilderness of vast floodplains, scattered with indigenous woodlands. Visitors can look forward to an array of wonderful activities along the Zambezi including game drives, walking safaris, canoe trips, and excellent tiger fishing.
A large proportion of the lodges in the area are actually based in the Chiawa Game Management Area (GMA) to the west of the park but the lack of any fences means that wildlife moves freely through the area although the concentration of wildlife does increase the closer you get to the park itself.
Wildlife tends to concentrate along the Zambezi River so the lodges in the area all focus on this section of the park with game viewing done by vehicle or by boat. The tall trees make for some great wildlife photography creating a stunning backdrop.
Elephant are common in the whole area and Buffalo are frequently seen in the park. Lions are regularly encountered and Leopards can sometimes be seen in the tall trees and on night drives. Both Samango and Vervet Monkeys occur here whilst Hippo and Crocodiles are common.
Birdlife along the river is excellent with over 370 species occurring including Malachite Kingfishers, African Fish-Eagle and African Skimmer.
