The Boteti River arises out of the outflow of the Okavango Delta and flows into Ntwetwe Pan in Makgadikgadi Pans. This seasonal river is a vital lifeline in the dry season and can attract exceptional numbers of wildlife with large herds of Zebra congregating here during their migration from the grasslands to the south. The river is home to Hippos and Crocodiles that survive in small pools of water, during dry years, while waiting for the river to flow.
After 30 years without flowing the Boteti River started to flow again in 2009 transforming the area. Since then the water levels have fluctuated with intermittent flooding and drying up of the river. In years of low rainfall the waterholes in the river provide a vital lifeline for wildlife in the area.
